Theotokos Panachranta

The Panachranta variation on the Theotokos - meaning the All-Immaculate Virgin Mary - depicts a full-length portrait of Mary enthroned with a young Christ in her lap. This particular rendition is rich with religious symbolism: Mary's vestments of red and blue represent the duality of her divinity, with red signifying, blood, humanity, and life on Earth, and blue signifying the kingdom of Heaven. Additionally, Jesus holds a globus cruciger - an orb and cross - which commonly represents His supremacy and stewardship over the world. These symbols are accompanied by traditional patterns present on the halos, garments, and borders of the image.
