This icon depicts the Baptism of Christ, often referred to as the Theophany, speaking to important aspects of Christ's role as the savior of creation. Through the help of St. John the Baptist and the intercession of the Holy Spirit (faintly depicted coming down from Heaven at the top of the image), Jesus stands scantily clad as a new symbol of Adam, ready to be clothed by the angels behind Him. In this way, Christ shows that He is without the shame of humanity and has come to be its redemptor; He is not immersed in water during the baptism, either, because creation becomes baptized in Him.
