Five years ago, I was looking for one great idea that would describe the difference between the new world and “old” one I would encounter in Europe. Now I realize it’s not about a difference but a similarity: Rome and its invention of world empire has inspired every subsequent city. Refugees, barbarians, pilgrims -- all of them took something from that dream and tried to make it their own. I am now just one of them.
