November Discussion Starter

Artist Cy Twombly was well known for taking poems, rearranging them, and producing art. Are the red drops wine? Are they blood? Twombly wants to sharpen our senses, so we have to ask such things. The original poem has been edited by Twombly so that “gods” are erased in favor of the more vague “they,” opening up a world of possibilities for the reader. This short poem is reduced even further by the artist when he cuts off a total of four lines. In his mind, I suppose, the extra words add nothing to the idea conveyed and their erasure creates a powerful compression of meaning.
